Joseph's Story

'We wanted a practical tool that works in all circumstances.'

Joseph is part of the Turkana water team who is constantly in the field to maintain pumps. These activities and the maintenance are not easy to be documented. Documentation is done on paper, but the books are not appropriately kept and followed up; there is no overview of pumps, repairs, or spare parts needed etc.

The Issue

Clean drinking water

Turkana County in Eastern Kenya, with an area about the size of Austria, is one of the driest regions in East Africa. Access to clean drinking water is a constant challenge for the people of Turkana. The water project of the Diocese of Lodwar installs and maintains vital pumping systems in the whole county.

The app

The Solution: mWater

In the framework of the Borrow-a-TA program at HORIZONT3000, a workshop was set up and the online APPmWater was adapted for the use of the water team of the Diocese of Lodwar which can be easily handled and used.

Clemens Griesauer was asked to support the Water Team in the field of Monitoring and Evaluation. In 2 visits and several workshop sessions, the team and Clemens developed ideas how to work more effectively.

Implementation

Progress

Finally, the mWater APP was adapted to the needs of the Turkana Water Team and introduced in the working process. A big advantage of this App is that all the information can be recorded using the cellphones of the Team members even if they are offline. The moment the APP reaches a signal, all the data is sent to the administration office.

The Results

Today

Now the team works more effectively because of this technical innovation in their working process. The easy handling of the mWater APP is a great tool to use in the field and at the same time do a smart documentation because it is possible to report text messages, GPS-Data and photos as well.

The Diocese of Lodwar is thinking about a follow-up workshop within the Borrow-a-TA program because the support of the technical advisor was essential for the success of this project.

There’s a lot more where this came from. Curious?
