The engagement as international advisor for a partner organisation overseas involves various phases of assessment, monitoring and reflection between the application for a position and the return to the country of the advisor’s origin.
The professional profiles required depend on the demands of our partner organisations. Therefore, the job profiles can vary greatly, but all are applied to strengthen and amplify the capacities of the partner organisations.
Having a good command of the respective lingua franca is a must to be able to communicate and work efficiently as an advisor. Level B1/B2 (GERS) are required in English, Spanish or Portuguese, at least. We can support retraining.
Applicants need be at least 22 years old. Advisors older than 55 need to present a detailed health statement to the international travel insurance company.
All citizens of the EU, Switzerland and Liechtenstein can be deployed directly by horizont3000 (Vienna) on basis of the Austrian Labor Law.
For the assignment of other citizens the conditions of assignment (visa, work permit, taxes, insurance etc.) need to be screened individually.
No, wo do not ask for religious beliefs, all confessions – also those of no denomination – are welcome. Respect and open-mindedness are critical traits to socialize and work successfully with people from different religious backgrounds.
The living and working conditions (accessibility) can be difficult in the countries we work in, also the medical health care system might not be sufficient. Therefore, we reserve the right to discuss the placement of applicants with disabilities or impairments on a case-by-case basis.

The medical examination (called TTU, acronym for the German term) determines a person’s fitness for service in the tropics. It encompasses several standard medical examinations (complete blood count, electrocardiogram, lung function, etc.).
The ON-BOARDING in Vienna runs for 2-3 weeks. It focuses on codes of conduct, policies, safety & security, safeguarding, working with logframe, reporting, etc.
The IN-COUNTRY-TRAINING in Kampala (UG) runs for 2-4 weeks. It includes gender issues, peer coaching, intercultural communications, etc.
Preparation, On-Boarding and In-Country-Training takes place twice a year - April and October. Therefore time for departure is usually May and November. But the departure also depends on issuing of the work permit, so, three to six months may pass between confirmation and placement.
Safety situation, health risks or the availability of international schools are important factors that need to be considered, when children shall be joining the advisor for the time of deployment.
We have regional and country offices in Uganda, Mozambique, Senegal and Nicaragua. Their staff supports the advisors and help them organising private requirements. Scheduled monitoring visits and an annual meeting of all advisors in the region are standardized tools to discuss any arising issues.
Standard assignments last two years and can be extended to up to a maximum of five years. As any contract according to Austrian Labor Law, employments can be terminated mutually before the contract’s natural end.
All advisors have Austrian health, liability and accident insurance. In case of prolonged illness, the Austrian Salaried Employees Act applies. We additionally take out an international travel insurance for our advisors and their dependents.

Employment starts with the beginning of the preparation training. During this time, the employee will receive a gross basic income of EUR 910/month. The costs for accommodation in Vienna are covered.
An advisor earns a basic salary, a subsistence and housing allowance. There are regional differences (depending on living costs), but in average a total net salary of approx. € 2000 per month (with spouse and 2 children about € 2600). We also cover transport, health insurance and school fees.
