Supporting children, adolescents and young people in the Los Poetas District in developing small businesses and promoting good living conditions, free from violence, especially gender-based violence.
Directly involved: 265 people, the majority of whom (185) are children, adolescents and young people between the ages of 9 and 25, as well as caregivers, promoters, managers and journalists who face economic and emotional difficulties through marginalization and multiple crises. Indirectly involved are 9.000 people.
Nicaragua is a country of young people; around 70% of the country's total population is under 30 years old. 60% of young adults are unemployed and a large percentage have been forced to leave the country by the socio-political crisis triggered in 2018. Sexual abuse is a frightening everyday occurrence in Nicaragua and gender-based violence has become worse. Violence usually occurs within families or among acquaintances and systematically prevents children and young people from a healthy development. It is therefore very urgent to work on a non-violent environment for young people and to pay attention to the consequences of violence, as well as to strengthen children and young people's self-confidence and to inform them about their rights and how to claim them. This is the third project phase, which builds on the results and experiences from previous projects between 2016 and 2022, as well as a long history of cooperation between horizont3000 and the partner organisation MARY BARREDA.
Asociación MARY BARREDA (AMB), a non-profit with Christian orientation based on liberation theology, founded 1993 in Nicaragua, works in rural and urban areas of the department of León. It contributes to a just society. Its vision is that children, adolescents, young people and adult women can claim their rights in a safe environment.
