Rapid dissemination of climate-friendly, efficient cookstoves within the diocese of Masaka in order to improve the cooking conditions and health of families and reduce the consumption of firewood.
Directly involved: 1650 rural households
To meet basic energy needs, rural households in Uganda are mostly dependent on firewood. The majority of rural households in the project area cook on open three-stone fires, a that requires large quantities of wood. This has serious social (e.g. health) and environmental impacts (e.g. deforestation, CO2 emissions). Thus, energy-efficient cookers are distributed to interested families at an affordable price, subsidised by carbon credits generated by the reduction of harmful emissions. The Caritas MADDO Rocketstove is installed directly in the kitchen, made of bricks and very durable. It was selected and tested in a participatory manner to meet local needs and preferences. It significantly reduces the consumption of firewood and smoke production, contributing to the health of mostly women and children and reducing the amount of money and time spent on buying or collecting firewood. The use of local materials and the training of stove builders strengthens the local economy.
