Distribution of climate-friendly, efficient cookers in households and institutions in the diocese of Masaka to improve the cooking and health conditions of families and cooks in households and canteen kitchens and reduce firewood consumption.
Directly involved: 11.200 people in household (with Caritas MADDO Rocket Stove), 2.800 people (cooking staff in institutions). Indirectly involved: 110.000 end consumers in institutions (e.g. pupils), 45 employees and cooking staff.
In 9 districts of the Masaka diocese in south-east Uganda, the majority of people cook on open fires or cookers of poor quality in mostly closed rooms, especially in rural areas, households and institutional kitchens. This results in high wood consumption and health problems due to smoke exposure. The use of biomass is unsustainable; deforestation rates are very high and wood is becoming increasingly scarce and expensive as a result. H3 has been a partner of the ecumenical carbon offset fund Klima-Kollekte since 2018. Since 2020, a very successful pilot project co-financed by DKA has been implemented as a CO2 compensation micro-project according to Gold Standard criteria (but not yet certified) with Caritas MADDO as the local project partner of the Diocese of Masaka. As part of the project, locally produced, efficient cookers that save up to 63% firewood (approx. 5 tonnes of CO2 per year) have been and continue to be sold to households at a price heavily subsidised by CO2 certificates.
