Mozambique is inundated with a flood of waste, 60% of which is organic. There is no established waste or disposal system in the country. Decree 13/2006 regulates the handling of waste and designates municipalities as responsible. However, these have too little money, and infrastructur to act efficiently. Waste collection works best in urban centres and not well in the suburbs, which has a direct impact on diseases and epidemics. Waste recovery and recycling is still uncommon in Mozambique, mostly only in individual projects or initiatives, many of which can be traced back to AMOR’s work. In the 10 selected municipalities in the provinces, the state does not have the capacity or is largely absent when it comes to the disposal or processing of waste; however, government agencies have shown interest in cooperating. Unregulated waste dumps are currently the norm, and waste is often incinerated, which is harmful to health and contributes to environmental damage (greenhouse gases).
