Participants

Directly involved are 400 women and 80 men, among them adolescents and youngsters, women victims of Gender Based Violence (GBV), sex workers, community leaders and family members, indirectly the project will reach up to 35.000 inhabitants of the department of León, through media campaigns.

Background

The prevalence of Gender Based Violence (GBV) has historically been high in Nicaragua and pressure on women is high with manyfold responsibilities from income generation to household chores and the support for their children's studies. In addition, in the context of recent crisis, unemployment has increased, as well as informal work and commercial sexual exploitation. The situation of GBV impacts women's health through physical, psychological and sexual harm. In families, physical punishment has been naturalised as a form of upbringing, reinforced by an education system marked by adultism and androcentrism that promotes the assumption of gender roles. One of the groups most vulnerable to GBV are sex workers. Amnesty International points the high levels of GBV against women in sex work and that these cases are rarely investigated, is compounded by the profound discrimination that makes justice almost impossible to obtain. The project focuses on the identification and reporting of gender-based violence and initiate processes of legal and psychological care of vulnerable population groups in two districts of León. At the same time, it will support them to developed their competences and put into practice self-protection measures, such as overcome economic and emotional dependence, low self-esteem, and to have family/community support networks in place.
