The patriarchal system in Adami Tulu Jido Kombolcha (ATJK) Woreda in East Shewa Zone Oromia Region still remains intact in the community to continue deprivation of land ownership right for poor women and because men’s power over women denied them the right to participate in the public space. Accordingly, the status of women is dictated by deeply rooted traditional practices of patriarchal system. However, due to longstanding patriarchal trend, land ownership, the decision-making power, income control and the leadership role is still in the hands of men. Even though land is officially registered and certified jointly as per the law, practice remains that men take most major decisions on land issues. As individual household secure 0.75 to 3 hectare land scarcity is the major problem for the both men and women, and this in turn affects poor women struggle for securing land ownership right. As the result, men don‘t want to share their dominant power over controling farming land. As land ownership and decision making power remains under the control of men, implying that economic shocks create a greater impact on women.
Our primary focus is to empower women and girls and improve the social and cultural norms for proactive participation of women in social, economic and political issues that affect their life. We aim to bring gender equality changes at individual, family, community and institutions level for gender equitable transformation.
