Supply of water, particularly for vulnerable women, men and young people, while distributing labour gender-equitably. People benefit from the installation of solar systems, the organisation of training courses and support for schools to become 'development centres' for new technical solutions.
100.000 people (52.000 women and 48.000 men) from marginalised and vulnerable groups as well as 145.000 animals. Indirectly, 24 communities with between 5.000 and 15.000 inhabitants will benefit.
One of the biggest challenges in Turkana County is ensuring an adequate water and sanitation supply. As there are few water-bearing rivers in Turkana County, most of the water for people and livestock comes from groundwater sources that are tapped using pumps. Most water points are operated manually, and pumping systems frequently break down. In addition, cyclical periods of drought have a serious impact on the livelihoods of the predominantly nomadic population. A large part is periodically dependent on food aid. The development of alternative sources of food and income is essential in order to reduce the impact of droughts. Turkana is a patriarchal community. Women are involved in initiatives to support livelihoods, but are not involved in decision-making. Due to the decrease in livestock, women play an active role in ensuring the survival of their families by engaging in diversified income-generating activities. Simultaneously, the number of female-headed households has increased.
