Contribute to the adaptive capacity of dam affected communities in Pará and Rondônia in the Amazon, Brazil and the prevention of destruction of ecosystems and traditional livelihoods, through the defence of their (land) rights and advocacy for climate justice and a fair energy transition.
Indirectly involved are about 36.628 people, including women, men and children. Those affected and threatened by these dams are peasant, riverine, traditional, indigenous and urban communities.
Historically, the Amazonas region has suffered the consequences of indiscriminate exploitation, generating innumerable impacts on the entire environmental and cultural heritage and on the people who live there. There are mega mining projects, energy generation, wood extraction, big agribusiness with cattle breeding and soy plantations, waterway, railway and port projects, which convert this wealth into a region of stolen and degraded territories. These economic operations do not respect the right of populations to territory, self-determination, consultation and prior consent, causing huge socio-environmental conflicts and reducing the adaptive capacity of the local population through the erosion of their traditional livelihoods.
Strengthen the climate literacy, the coordination and organisational capacity of groups of dam-affected people, to advocate for their (land) rights and access to sustainable energy and to reforest/afforest their natural environment.
It is currently present in 19 states in all regions of Brazil. MAB's objectives are to defend rights and repair the damage caused to affected populations; to build an energy model that is economically viable, environmentally sustainable and socially just; and to build a society of solidarity and environmental justice.
