‘Around the campfire’ - Safe space for women
Problem & Solution
Sitting around a campfire is a traditional way of exchanging experiences, previously reserved only for men. Women were excluded and did not have an intimate and safe space to exchange stories and experiences, especially in relation to Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and machismo.
The solution was to introduce regular campfire session as 'safe spaces', where women can share experiences, wisdom and hope in the area of GBV, its reduction and prevention.
The experience
The "Around the campfire" method gives us the opportunity to make women realise that it is possible to free themselves from the spiral of violence (with the examples of others who have been through it) and to show them where they can turn to and what the possible procedures for help are, as well as informing them about the laws protecting them against GBV.
It is an exchange of experience between women, creating opportunities to express themselves openly without taboo. There is usually dancing and singing at the beginning and end, and a small meal is shared.
Challenges
- It can be misinterpreted if only women and girls are allowed to take part in this activity in the community. This should be discussed in advance and the reasons explained so that no one feels excluded.
Impact
- Information is shared and victims of violence can know where to turn to
- Reducing and preventing GBV and reducing early marriage and early pregnancy by raising awareness
- Information about existing laws that defend women and girls
- Creating a space for exchanging experiences
Lessons Learned
- The special atmosphere around the campfire, the protected environment and the survivors' testimonies allow those affected to open up and talk about their problems. This allows help and support to be initiated directly.
- Depending on the topic, it's important to include men and boys in the too.
