problem & solution

San Pedro had a tree nursery during the previous mayor's term and some important environmental projects were implemented. However, the new mayor decided not to continue with these projects.

The solution was to take the initiative and involve experienced people (men and women of different ages and school groups from the region) in the construction of nurseries, to pass on their knowledge about the environment.

the experience

Here are the steps involved in building the nursery:

  • Search for a plot of land
  • Finding suitable workers for the construction of the project
  • Construction of the polyethylene tunnel and raised beds
  • Finding and transporting suitable soil
  • Cultivation of seeds and care
  • Cultivation of the small plants in sheets

Challenges

01

  • Difficult to transmit that eucalyptus, which is planted for its fast growth, is not suitable in this context - eucalyptus needs a lot of water and depletes the soil
02

Impact

02

  • Increased knowledge about the cultivation of indigenous/local plants
  • Raising awareness of young people about the environment in schools (less litter in the villages)
  • Increased awareness of local biodiversity
03

Lessons Learned

03

  • You can always do something, you have to take the first step
  • You have to inform yourself at various levels, consult various institutions and learn more and more, know who to trust and not be left with empty promises
